As the two slowly develop feelings for each other on the vacation and eventually must return to London together, Simran’s father discovers the relationship and insists Simran journey back to India at once. She convinces her father to let her to venture on a summer trip before she must return to India to fulfill her ultimate fate. Simran, while still valuing her familial obligations and Indian traditions, wants to explore Europe before being committed to an arranged marriage in India. The film follows Raj (Shahrukh Khan), a wealthy Indian boy brought up in London, and Simran (Kajol), a much more traditionally raised Indian girl, whose extremely strict father (Amrish Puri) is making her, much to her disliking, return to Punjab to marry a proper Indian boy. It also aims to exemplify the challenges that come with attempting to retain Indian values across borders. This film broke new ground for future films that want to appeal to the Indian Diaspora through the utilization of foreign locations. Join us for the first film in our Diaspora series, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The Brave Hearted Will Take Away the Bride)! This is one of the most prominent films that explores the theme of identity in the Indian Diaspora. February 27th from 7-10pm- Space 2435, North Quad
